Every so often something comes along that really gets us excited and this is just that! The National Celiac Association welcomes our partnership with the Gluten-Free Food Program (GFFP). The GFFP offers a strong and impressive program certifying companies in the hospitality industry. Restaurants, hospitals, colleges, and others will greatly benefit from this certification because don’t we all want to eat at places we know are safe?
July 22, 2018 --Sunday, 12-3pm; Picnic and pool party for families and friends will be held in Encinitas.
We will have an audience Q & A session with San Diego's top-notch celiac specializing dietitian EA Stewart, BS, MBA, RDN. The event is geared toward adults and children of all ages.
JUST FOR KIDS: Enjoy our annual pinata fun for kids with gluten-free candies (we will publish the list of candies in advance and you can decide whether you would like your children to eat them in advance) and non-food treats, plus swimming, and lots of climbers and sand play available at the site.
This event is always well attended, and we will have quite a few hard backed chairs and a couple of picnic tables available, but if possible we recommend bringing a few lawn chairs for yourself.
Some of our picnic lunch will be catered by 2Good2B, a dedicated gluten free cafe/bakery. Mountain Mike's will provide the pizza. Although it is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant, employees have been trained in the prep of gluten free pizza.
Bread, fresh fruit, dessert, and bottled water will be provided by NCA San Diego Board Members.
Entrees include a House Salad (mixed greens, cucumber, tomato and shredded carrots, served with balsamic dressing) and freshly baked pita bread.
Chicken breast with zucchini, red onion, bell pepper and button mushrooms. Tossed in a cilantro and citrus vinaigrette and roasted in the oven.

We know it can be overwhelming when you're diagnosed figuring out what the disease means, what you can't/can eat, and how to adjust your lifestyle. Our San Diego non-profit support group of over 100 people of all age groups are also here for you or your diagnosed family members or children.
As your diagnosing medical doctor may have told you, a lot of dietitians are not necessarily trained in following a celiac safe gluten-free diet or are keeping up on the sometimes monthly important changes in packaged products or products. grains, flour, lentils, and seeds, that you think should be naturally gluten-free but may get cross contaminated in trucks, mills, or processing
The most important tool for those newly diagnosed is surely to connect with one of the several knowledgeable celiac specializing dietitians in San Diego. We believe connecting with them will shave many months off of your learning curve for following a celiac-safe gluten-free diet. It's incredibly helpful to have a support group, also. Getting help from a celiac specializing dietitian and participating in a support/advocacy group were two of the top recommendations by the National Institute of Health for those newly diagnosed with celiac disease.
Additionally, here is a special powerpoint presentation just for those who are newly diagnosed with celiac by the National Celiac Association (NCA) in Boston and expert celiac dietitian Melinda Dennis, MS, RDN as a starting point. The presentation was also reviewed by several doctors on NCA's Board. It was last updated in May 2018.

Suregel pectin has no obvious gluten ingredients, but when we called the Heinz company this week who makes it, they said they could not guarantee it was gluten-free and could be cross contaminated to contain > 20 ppm gluten. SIGH!
So, here are some tips on making homemade pectin. Note, if making apple pectin (we usually use a few green granny smith apples) be sure to remove the seeds first and definitely use the cores).
