Steps For a Successful Back to School Experience
The time to go back to school is on the horizon. It’s a time of year that can generate excitement, anxiety, and anticipation in both kids and their caregivers. This can be especially true for families with kids who need to eat gluten free due to their celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. On August 7th at 4:00 pm PT, the National Celiac Association will be holding a live webinar with a panel of experts, including parents, to: Answer questions to help provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for your student(s). Provide tips, tactics, and communication tools that can be used with teachers and the school for a better understanding of their needs. Learn about 504 plans and how to implement them. (There is a tab on this website that will give you information on the 504 plan.) Prepare plans for the school day. Learn how to manage after school activities and sports. Hear real stories about successes and challenges and how to navigate them. In addition to having your questions answered during our NCA webinar, every person who registers AND attends the event will be entered into a drawing for one of five (5) gift baskets to be given away by our event sponsor, Little Northern Bakehouse. So, pack up those bookbags and join us on August 7th at 4:00 pm PT for what is certain to be an informative and entertaining learning experience.
Supporting Celiac Seniors Committee
We have established a committee to problem-solve important issues within the celiac and gluten-free community as it relates to seniors. We are planning our next meeting so please email Carla Carter if you are interested in joining.
Support Legislative Efforts Today to Make a Difference for Tomorrow through
the FLMA and ADINA Act
The Food Labeling Modernization Act (FLMA) of 2023 was introduced on 4/26/23 in both the House and Senate. Please see the press release here. Pertinent to the gluten-free community, the FLMA would amend the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) to require that food product packaging disclose ALL gluten-containing grains (wheat, barley, and rye) in the ingredient list and/or “Contains” statement on ingredient labels.
The Allergen Disclosure In Non-Food Articles (ADINA) Act was introduced on 6/21/23 in both the House and Senate. The ADINA Act would require drugs to label a major food allergen or a gluten-containing grain.
